The Buildbase BMW Motorrad team battled the worst of the April showers to bring home a podium finish in the Metzeler National Superstock race. Despite the worsening conditions, all of the team's four riders put in impressive lap times during the weekend's sessions, showing the potential of the stunning new 2012 BMW S 1000 RR. However, increasingly poor conditions meant the second BSB race was called off.
Steve Brogan rode his BMW S 1000 RR Superstock bike to second place on a waterlogged track, securing 20 points and setting himself well on the way to defending BMW Motorrad's 2011 Superstock 1000 title. Team mate Howie Mainwaring brought his RR home in 12th place and took his first points of the season, a good result for his first wet ride on the BMW.
BSB riders Barry Burrell and Dan Linfoot both suffered crashes during the weekend's wet and windy riding, but both were uninjured and able to continue. Barry brought his RR home in 19th position in the first BSB race. Dan Linfoot fought his way up to sixth place in first, but crashed out at Paddock Hill bend during his fastest lap. Dan was bruised but uninjured and would have joined the second race, which was cancelled later in the day
Steve Brogan, Superstock 1000 rider, said: "All in all, it's been a good weekend. A podium finish and a good qualifying time is a very good start to the season. And the race was a good one, I had a good dice with the eventual winner and got through the back markers without being tied up. The traction control on my Superstock BMW S 1000 RR was active, and the heated grips were very welcome in the cold! Yes, really. It's been a great start to the year, and I aim to improve on today's results."
Stuart Hicken, team principal, said: "Despite the poor weather and wet conditions, we have had a very promising weekend. Both Dan and Barry weren't out of the top ten throughout the practice and early qualifying sessions and both fought their way into the top six. They both suffered crashes, but neither were hurt, and both are very happy with the impressive performances of their S 1000 RRs
"Steve Brogan took a second place on his first time out on the Superstock 1000 RR, while Howie Mainwaring coming home in 12th place in very trying conditions. All in all, we're very happy with our performance across the board. The riders and bikes have showed great promise in very difficult circumstances, which makes me very optimistic. All we need is better weather for Thruxton next week!"
The next race takes place at Thruxton in Hampshire in just under a week's time.
